Here, we'll discuss the Palace on Wheels luxury train in India, including its itinerary, attractions, tours, and onboard service.

Palace on Wheels Accommodation Review

The Palace on Wheels itself is an excellent mixture of traditional and modern India. This luxury train will be your home for 7 days, and they have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The train is massive; it includes 39 Deluxe Cabins and 2 Super Deluxe Cabins, with the option of single or double occupancy. The train has a maximum capacity of 82 passengers, and each cabin features a private bathroom, a small wardrobe, a coffee table, chairs, and a butler to look after you. We slept in one of the Super Deluxe Cabins, which had a large double bed, a work table, and a roomy bathroom.

The train is fully air-conditioned, the shower water is steamy hot, and they provide internet access, however, the Wi-Fi is unreliable because the train travels through places with no 3G or 4G service. There are two restaurants or bars aboard the train, as well as an Ayurveda Spa that provides massages and treatments.

The Palace on Wheels caters to all of your health needs, including an in-house gym and spa. If you want to exercise, you can utilize the treadmill or stationary cycle at the Palace on Wheels Spa.

The train is undeniably comfortable, however several passengers had difficulty sleeping owing to the train's noise and movement. The Palace on Wheels features all of the conventional hotel amenities. Hair dryers, towels, and stationery are all provided. Furthermore, there is a wardrobe with a lock and key so that you can secure your items throughout the day if you like. Along with the accommodation amenities, the spa facilities are also available for an extra fee and will let you relax during your journey.

Food and Restaurants on Palace on Wheels:

The train houses two multi-cuisine restaurants: Maharaja and Maharani. Both restaurants feature exquisite Indian, Continental, Italian, and Mughlai delicacies. The restaurant's staff and service are great, and they guarantee that you have the most comfortable eating experience possible each time you visit.

All you have to do is go sit, and the staff will take care of the rest. They serve you with love and care. And they present each meal prepared for you. Both restaurants offer bars that sell delicious beverages and mocktails to suit your needs.

Breakfast includes made-to-order eggs, bacon, toast, sweet pastries, Indian bread, fruit, and yogurt. All are offered with one choice of fresh juice, two options of canned juice, and coffee. The menus for the two lunches we had on the train were identical to those for the dinners.

Most of the meals were served aboard the train and were enormous feasts. Every evening, as the train was in motion, a pre-set menu featuring Continental and Indian cuisine was delivered in a true dance by servers wearing silver trailing.

The meals were really good overall! Everything was prepared freshly, and the cuisine was excellent. While water, tea, and coffee are all free of charge, alcohol is not. Only soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are subject to payment.

Hospitality & Service

In my opinion, the staff is the most important aspect of the train ride. Your every need will be met from the time you arrive at the station until you depart, by personal butlers, chefs, and tour managers, among others. There are two personal butlers available to you in each train car. Our butlers were incredibly attentive to our needs; every morning when we woke up, tea and cookies were waiting for us. I can't guarantee that all butlers will be this amazing, but from what I experienced, they all had incredible qualities that added such a unique flavor to our journey.

Even the kitchen staff and tour guides were all fantastic and entertaining. Our tour managers were amazing as they managed our daily itinerary and informed us of any changes. Having caring, responsive staff to attend to all of your needs is priceless.

Itinerary

The itinerary is one of the highlights of this train journey. After studying a few luxury trains in India, I discovered that the Palace on Wheels schedule was great for first-time travelers to the country because it covers the most renowned places in the shortest period. Your tour begins and ends in Delhi, however, there are no included activities for the city, so we recommend arriving a few days early or staying a few days after to explore the lavish spots!

Jaipur

Here in the Pink City Jaipur, we were treated to an action-packed day full of Jaipur's sights. We started our day in the Albert Hall Museum, which has history and photo opportunities at every turn. Before lunch, we had the chance to see the stunning Hawa Mahal and the City Palace.

From here, we traveled to the magnificent Amber Fort by elephant or jeep. For ethical reasons, we recommend taking a Jeep; it is just as fun!

Once we arrived, we were guided through the many archways to delicately and artistically made rooms on our way to dine at the incredible 1135. This was my favorite lunch of the trip, so don't miss out!

Ranthambore and Chittorgarh.

The train arrived at Ranthambore early, allowing guests to embark on a tiger safari. We sat in open-top jeeps to watch the Bengal Tiger. The park was magnificent and full of other creatures to keep you busy with your camera. We also spotted lots of monkeys, deer, and several species of birds. A short train trip while you eat breakfast and clean up takes you to Chittorgarh and its magnificent

UNESCO World Heritage Fort.

The monkeys were the major attraction for us! The fort will thereafter host a light and sound extravaganza throughout the evening. To be honest, the light show was weak, but the story given was great and provided valuable insight into the fort's history and daily life.

Udaipur

The next morning, we arrived at the Udaipur City Railway Station, where we were greeted with local entertainment as we made our way to the buses. A unique tour was organized for us at the Ambrai Restaurant. An outdoor concert stage was set up for a private performance by 2 world-class musicians with instruments I'd never seen before. It was a breathtaking setting with a great performance.

We then visited the Brahma Arts and Textile studio, where we saw local artisans create magnificent pieces of art using only a single hair from a brush. I was so surprised that I purchased 3 paintings.

Jaisalmer

The next day, we arrived at Jaisalmer Railway Station and traveled to Gadisar Lake, a calm area to spend the morning. The water had a calming and peaceful effect on me. There are many fascinating things to see within a short walk from Gadisar Lake, and the first stop was Patwon Ki Haveli, a village with a high concentration of Havelis, which are incredibly elaborate townhouses constructed of soft stone with beautifully carved decorations. We then visited Fort Jaisalmer, which was incredibly chaotic and maybe one of my least favorite stops on the Palace of Wheels tour.

Jodhpur

Jodhpur was our next destination. As we departed the Palace on Wheels, we were greeted by a large marching band, which pumped us up for the day ahead. Our first visit was at the Mehrangarh Fort, which is a spectacular sight with its rising and impregnable-looking walls carved within a rocky hill that looms several hundred feet above Jodhpur's skyline. Mehrangarh was one of the most impressive forts I'd seen in India.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and Agra

We arrived at the Agra Cantonment Railway Station after having breakfast on the train. We went to the Agra Fort to see the luxurious red sandstone and marble fort. The food and setting were simply wonderful. This restaurant is located on the hotel's top floor and has an outside deck from which you can see the Taj Mahal. Unluckily, the weather was not looking good; it was gloomy with low visibility.

After lunch, we went to the Taj Mahal, and it seemed like the weather cleared up quickly. After going past security, we made our way to the entrance. Once I walked through the gigantic gates, I was halted in my tracks by the splendor that lay before me. The Taj Mahal is quite breathtaking. After a beautiful day in Agra, we returned to the Palace of Wheels for our farewell dinner service.

Final Thoughts

Palace on Wheels was all we expected for our first journey to India, providing a great introduction to the country's culture and attire. It is an exciting and unique travel experience that you would not be able to have on your own. After the trip, you'll be ready to explore India on your own or another luxury train.
