The Punjab Kings' IPL 2025 Captain is Shreyas Iyer

For the 2025 IPL season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have named Indian and Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer as their captain. This follows his outstanding 2024 IPL title-winning performance as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain. Iyer's ability to lead has also been evident this season, as he led Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Shreyas Iyer's Experience in the IPL

After the appointment, Iyer, the second-most expensive player in the IPL 2025 player auction, thanked the team. "I feel privileged that the team has trusted me. 

During the Big Boss announcement on the well-liked reality TV program, he said, "I am excited to work with coach Ricky Ponting once more. " 

He added that he intended to win PBKS's first IPL championship and was thrilled to be in charge of a team that included established and promising players.

Excellent Guidance from Shreyas Iyer

Iyer has received a lot of recognition for his leadership skills. Ricky Ponting, head coach of PBKS, said he had faith in Iyer's skills.

Having guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to the championship last year, Iyer, 30, is among the IPL's most prestigious captains. 

With the largest purse at the big auction, PBKS could outbid the Delhi Capitals and buy Iyer for INR 26.75 crore, or around USD 3.18 million. 

Before the Lucknow Super Giants acquired Rishabh Pant for INR 27 crore, making him the most costly purchase in the auction, Iyer was briefly the most expensive player in IPL history.

Iyer's Prior Capt. Achievements

This will be Iyer's third IPL team after the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He made his debut with DC in 2015 and was named captain halfway through the 2018 season. 

Under his direction, DC qualified for the playoffs thrice in a row, finishing second in 2020. Iyer's leadership was crucial in helping KKR win the 2024 IPL, demonstrating his ability and background in team leadership.

Iyer finished fourth among the top run-scorers in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season and guided Mumbai to victory. 

At an impressive strike rate of 188.52 and an average of nearly 49, he scored 345 runs in nine innings, including a century.

Ricky Ponting Reunion

Iyer's close bond with head coach Ricky Ponting played a significant role in his selection as PBKS captain. The two had collaborated in DC before, and they were very successful there. 

Ponting discussed their previous partnership, and it was clear that he respected Iyer's abilities and leadership. I desired to collaborate with Shreyas."
