South India's Next Generation of Business Leaders, Identified Through a Rigorous New Benchmark
India / Global — 2025: South India has become one of the country's most dynamic business hubs — home to fast-scaling technology firms, expanding manufacturing bases, and a growing healthcare and financial services sector. Identifying the young leaders actually shaping that growth, rather than simply the most visible ones, was the goal behind the ET Edge 40 Under 40 – South Edition 2025, with Coherent Market Insights (CMI) serving as Research Partner.
The platform recognizes extraordinary business leaders under 40 across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and the Union Territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep — individuals building both traditional industries and next-generation business models. At the event, Mohit Shrivastava, AVP – Research & Consulting at CMI, presented the research methodology behind the selection: a structured, evidence-led framework built on credibility, transparency, and balanced representation, incorporating multi-stage screening, sector mapping, weighted scoring, and independent jury validation.
Casting a Wide, Careful Net
Rather than starting from a shortlist of known names, CMI's process began with broad eligibility screening. Candidates needed to be under 40 as of October 31, 2025, maintain a significant business presence across South India, and have held a strategic leadership role — Founder, Co-founder, CEO, or equivalent — for at least three years. From there, the team assessed professional background, leadership trajectory, innovation, measurable growth, and recent achievements, sourcing candidates through the ET Edge microsite, corporate filings, business intelligence platforms, startup ecosystems, industry associations, editorial outreach, and structured nominations.
To keep the list representative rather than lopsided, candidates were mapped across technology, healthcare, manufacturing, BFSI, consumer goods, infrastructure, and emerging industries. Companies were also grouped into revenue bands — Emerging Businesses (below ₹50 crore), SMEs (₹50–100 crore), and Large Enterprises (above ₹100 crore) — ensuring leaders weren't judged against an unlevel playing field. The longlist ultimately spanned Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities and prioritized gender inclusivity. Each profile was then put through structured desk-level validation, checking leadership tenure, revenue classification, and business impact against statutory filings and credible public sources.
From Longlist to Final Cohort
The shortlisted leaders were scored on a standardized framework weighing individual leadership qualities more heavily than company performance: 55% for leader-specific factors such as vision, innovation, measurable impact, governance practices, and future potential, and 45% for organization-specific metrics like revenue growth, strategic partnerships, key initiatives, and industry recognition.
The final stage brought outside scrutiny into the process, with independent jury evaluation conducted by senior editorial members from The Economic Times, alongside industry experts, investors, and academic professionals. Comprehensive checks followed before the final list was confirmed.
A Benchmark Built on Rigor
According to Shrivastava, the entire exercise followed a meticulous, transparent, multi-layer process: a broad pool of candidates, filtered through strict eligibility rules, refined by balanced scoring, and validated by an independent jury. What emerged was a credible, diverse, and high-impact cohort of South India's most promising leaders under 40 — one that CMI believes reflects the region's economic landscape more accurately than a popularity-driven list would.
For CMI, the exercise reinforces a broader mission: strengthening merit-based recognition systems that raise leadership standards and support more informed engagement across India's evolving business ecosystem.
