Law Firm SEO Expert: What GEO Is and Who Actually Does It

What a Law Firm SEO Expert Should Know About GEO (And Which Agencies Actually Do It)

A law firm SEO expert who also does generative engine optimization (GEO) should be able to show you three things. Those are the prompts they test, the changes they make, and repeated measurements of the AI answers that follow. GEO builds on SEO to make your firm’s accurate information discoverable, citable and recommendable in tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

That matters because a standard ranking report can’t tell you whether your firm appeared when a prospect asked an AI tool to compare divorce lawyers. If an agency can’t show its work, you’re paying for a label.

What Is GEO, and How Is It Different From SEO and AEO?

GEO is the work of making your firm’s details easy for AI tools to find, quote and recommend. It doesn’t replace SEO. Both rest on the same groundwork: a well-structured site, consistent firm details and trusted third-party mentions.

Many practitioners use GEO and answer engine optimization (AEO) interchangeably. When they separate the two, the difference is where the answer appears and how success is counted.

Where the “40%” Figure Comes From

The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors. It was later accepted to KDD 2024. The team built a benchmark of queries, rewrote source pages in different ways and measured how visible each page became in AI answers. Their best methods lifted visibility by up to 40%. That is a lab result on the authors’ own benchmark. It isn’t a forecast for your firm, and it says nothing about calls or signed cases.

Three findings matter for lawyers:

  • Citations, quotations and statistics were among the strongest methods tested.

  • Law and government queries benefited notably from added statistics.

  • Keyword stuffing produced little to no improvement.

On a practice-area page, that means linking each legal statement to the statute or court self-help page it comes from. It means quoting official wording with attribution. It also means stating filing deadlines, waiting periods and fees from official sources instead of writing “act quickly.” Repeating “best divorce lawyer” and your city down the page is the habit the paper found didn’t work. Our law firm AI search optimization checklist covers the page-level steps.

What AI Tools Said When We Asked

On October 21, 2026, SocioSquares asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews: “What is generative engine optimization, and which agencies actually do it?” First Page Sage, iPullRank, Go Fish Digital and Siege Media each appeared on three of the four platforms.

Two details stood out. None of the agencies named is a law firm specialist, and SocioSquares wasn’t named either. The answers also acknowledged that their lists were promotional or agency-reported, not independent rankings.

This was a one-day snapshot, and AI answers vary by run, location and account. Our guide to measuring AI citation share for law firms shows how to repeat the check on a schedule.

How Five Agencies Describe Their GEO Work

The table draws only on each agency’s own GEO or AEO service page, checked October 21, 2026. It isn’t a ranking. “Not described” means just that. The agency may still offer it, so ask.

Go Fish Digital is the only one of the four that lists legal among its sectors. If your firm wants a large, research-heavy program across many channels, any of them could be a reasonable call.

SocioSquares, a law firm marketing agency founded in 2011, is built for a different buyer: a firm that wants AI visibility and local search handled by one team. It is a Google Partner. Each month, its AEO services for law firms put your prospects’ questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Reports log how often your firm is named, how accurately it’s described and which firms appear instead.

To be candid about the gaps, SocioSquares’ published case studies report SEO and local map results, not GEO results. It wasn’t named in the October snapshot. Wikipedia and Reddit work sits outside its core AEO program as an add-on. It follows ISO 27001, but its HIPAA compliance report covers its India entity, SocioSquare Digitech Pvt. Ltd., so ask which entity will handle your data.

Why Hire a Law Firm SEO Expert Instead of a Generalist?

GEO for a law firm differs from GEO for a software brand in three ways.

Advertising rules limit what you can say. ABA Model Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading communications about a lawyer’s services. An AI answer naming your firm isn’t an endorsement. Advertising “ChatGPT’s top-rated divorce firm” can run into that rule and your state’s version of it. Reviews, case results and credentials added for GEO still fall under bar advertising rules and client confidentiality.

Confidentiality follows your data. If an agency links AI visibility to intake records, it’s handling information about prospective clients. Rule 1.6(c) requires reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure. Rule 5.3 makes firm managers responsible for reasonable measures over nonlawyer vendors. Ask what security standards the agency follows and who can access your intake data.

Local search and directories feed the same answers. AI tools check whether your firm name, practice areas, offices and bar admissions match across sources. Those sources include your Google Business Profile, your reviews and profiles on Avvo and Justia. An agency that treats GEO as separate from local search misses them. Our guide on how to show up in ChatGPT explains how these tools pick firms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which agencies do GEO for law firms?
In SocioSquares’ October 21, 2026 snapshot, First Page Sage, iPullRank, Go Fish Digital and Siege Media were each named by three of four AI tools. None is a law firm specialist. SocioSquares offers this work for law firms under the name AEO, with monthly AI-answer testing and reports that show the prompts and answers.

Is GEO the same as AEO?
Mostly, yes. The terms overlap. When people separate them, AEO usually means Google answer features, and GEO means standalone tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Did the GEO paper prove a 40% increase for businesses?
No. The paper reported visibility gains of up to 40% on the authors’ own research benchmark. It didn’t measure client campaigns, calls or cases.

Can my firm say ChatGPT recommends us?
Be careful. An AI answer isn’t an endorsement, and advertising it can conflict with Rule 7.1 or your state’s equivalent. Check your state bar’s rules first.

Does being cited mean being recommended?
No. An answer can cite your blog without naming your firm, or name your firm while citing a directory. Track mentions and citations separately.

How long does GEO take to show results?
It varies by firm, market and existing authority. Changes usually show up first in how often you’re mentioned and cited, not in signed cases. That’s why monthly measurement matters.
